How to play Sand Slice
Drag the knife across a block to slice it. That is the whole game; everything else is a different way to enjoy the sand. It works with a finger, a mouse or a keyboard, and needs no download.
The tools
| Tool | Key | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Knife | 1 | Drag across a block. The cut follows your drag at any angle and goes straight down. Thin slices tip over and land face up. |
| Wavy knife | 2 | The same, with a crinkle edge: the cut faces come out wavy. |
| Wire cutter | 3 | Start on the front of a block at the height you want and pull sideways across it. Everything above the wire slides off. |
| Spoon | 4 | Press on a block to scoop out a bowl, then let go where you want the scoop dropped. The inside of the bowl shows the layers. |
| Melon baller | 5 | Press to scoop out a round ball. Carry it and let go to drop it; squeeze it to crumble it. |
| Cookie cutter | 6 | Pick a shape (circle, heart, star, square, flower or triangle) and tap a block. The shape pops out and lands nearby. |
| Squeeze | 7 | Press and hold on a block or a ball to crush it into crumbs. Move while holding to crush more. |
| Rake | 8 | Drag over a block to comb grooves into it. Drag over loose crumbs on the tray to sweep them into a pile. |
| Roller | 9 | Drag over a block to flatten it. The layers inside get thinner, so later cuts show squashed stripes. |
| Stamp | 0 | Tap a pile of crumbs (about 70 or more) to press them into a new block in the shape you picked. |
| Move | - | Drag a piece to move it around the tray, for example to make room or to line up slices. |
Modes
- Free play on the main tray: pick any of the 55 blocks or a surprise block.
- Perfect slice: a dashed guide shows where the next thin slice goes. After each slice a short note says how even it was, and small bars in the corner show your slices side by side. No scores.
- Slow mode: the knife trails behind your finger, slices fall slowly and sounds ring longer. Good with headphones.
- Build a block: pour up to eight colored layers into a mold, press, unmold and slice.
- Compare: two blocks side by side, sliced in one stroke.
- Today's block: one block for everyone each day; three slices keep your streak.
Sand types
- Wet sand: packed, damp-looking sand that cuts glassy-smooth and breaks into soft clumps.
- Dry sand: loose, grainy sand that crunches loudly and sheds crumbs along every cut.
- Cloud sand: airy, fluffy sand that cuts with a whisper, rounds off at the edges and falls slowly.
Keyboard
Click or tab to the tray first. Arrow keys move the tool (hold Shift to move faster). Hold Space or Enter to press, and keep holding while you use the arrows to drag. S makes a slice for you, N brings a surprise block, and the number keys pick tools as listed above. The line under the tray reads out what happened.
Saving and sharing
The first slice of each block goes into your gallery as a photo of its cut face; Keep this cut saves more. Share this block copies a link that opens the same block for anyone. Save photo downloads a square picture of the cut face. Your gallery, streak and achievements stay in this browser only.
No sound or no vibration?
- Tap the tray once: browsers only allow sound after a tap or click.
- On an iPhone, check the silent switch. iPhones cannot vibrate from a web page, so a slice gives a small screen shake instead.
- Check that Sound and Vibration are switched on next to the tray. Reduce motion turns off the shake and shortens animations; it follows your device's setting at first.
